Did You Know That A Timely Intervention from Ex MUSIGA President, Mrs. Diana Hopeson Save The Three Gospel Music Categories From Being Dropped/Taken Out Completely from the VGMAs?

The biggest event on the Ghanaian Entertainment Calender which among other things aims to recognize and celebrate the hard work as well as dedication of the various players in the Ghanaian music industry will be happening very soon, may be in late April or early May.

Prior to the event itself, there have been several changes regarding to this year’s event. First of them all, some members who used to sit on the VGMA board were axed from this year’s board. They include veteran sound engineer and revered entertainment analyst, Mr. Fred Kyei Mensah (Fredyman), Mr. Ben Brako, Riche Mensah (of Lynxx Entertainment), PY Addo among others.

The second change which would have been the most shockingly shocking of them all was when the board decided to drop/take out the three (3) gospel music categories from the VGMA scheme completely. According to the board members arguing in favour of the motion to drop completely the three (3) gospel categories, they argued among others that more or less, there is no genre like gospel, that gospel does not exist at all, and that even if they would consider Gospel music to be part of the VGMAs, then it should be placed in the Reggae categories.

They stated among others that most of the gospel songs had it not being that their lyrics can be trace to Christianity of a sort, they would easily have being considered as Reggae songs, and that majority of the gospel songs are having Reggae feel as well as Reggae beats.

It was only the Ex MUSIGA President, Mrs. Diana Hopeson and Editor of Razz newspaper, Mr. Arnold Asamoah Baidoo who argued against the decision. Mrs. Diana Hopeson fought tooth and nail, and at a point got fury in her quest to ensure that Gospel Music categories were not taken out of the VGMA categories. If you know who/ the kind of person Mrs. Diana Hopeson actually is, then I don’t have to paint any perfect picture. She stated among others that the rest of the VGMA board members can say whatever they can in support of their arguments but she would not sit there and witness the three (3) gospel categories being dropped/ taken out completely from the VGMA category.   

The decision to remove/take out completely the three (3) gospel categories came to light when the board was reconsidering the criteria of the various categories of the VGMAs. The VGMA board is set to sit this coming Thursday, and after that the nominees list will be made known to the general public.
