‘Getting to the top is the easier part, staying is the real test’;
this is a popular quote that relates to everyday-life, however, it’s
linkage to showbiz is more profound.
Music business is tough business; getting to the top takes some
effort, dedication and strategy but staying on that pedestal, takes much
more effort, much zeal and strategic planning.
Competition for the top spot is always keen, with young ‘cats’ coming
out with ‘monster’ songs and old ‘guns’ trying to revive their careers
with incredible works. One’s stay at the top is never a surety.
2015 has been very eventful in the music industry but these artists,
who were almost all over the place with their music, brand and
performances in the last year or two, have not been as loud and intense
as expected.
While some remained dormant in the year, others did release material
in the year and some promoted stuff from the previous year, but
strangely, they were simply, ‘not in our faces’ like the previous year
(s).
The inability of some artists to constantly remain on top could be
due to varied factors: poor management, complacency, lack of motivation,
poor planning, or bad production, or perhaps bad luck.
Barely a month to close the year, it would be quite torrid to have
these guys make a statement but everything is possible. They may pull a
big surprise!
On the listing of artists who lost some spark thus far in the year, you can agree, disagree, make your own list or… well!
Kwabena Kwabena
For an artist who has reigned as ‘King of Highlife’ for years to have
been quite inactive thus far in the year is baffling – especially when
highlife genre has been very dominant during the period.
Kwabena was huge in the previous years with ‘Bue Kwan’ and other hit
songs but 2015 has unusually been quiescent for the ‘Ladies Man’.
‘Kyere Wo Do’ was supposed to help him stay at the top, but it was not well-received like previous ones. Could it be the ‘juju’?
4X4
The trio’s fire has been quenched this year, although they tried and
made all the moves, but for some reason, it just didn’t work.
The previous years had them release banging tunes – ‘Baby Dance’,
‘Roses’ and more and they were enlisted at high-profile shows but this
year; nothing seemed to have worked.
‘Kpagam Kpagam’ did little to maintain them at the top this year. Their
silence in 2015 is quite worrying, and one even wonders if they are
still together.
MzVee
MzVee was the most-utilized artist in the previous year; she was all
over the place with hit songs and eye-pleasing performances.
‘Revolution’, ‘Borkorkor’, ‘Natural Girl’ and other collaborations with
Shatta Wale took her to another level.
In 2015, MzVee has released songs, ‘My Time’, ‘Hold Me Now’ and ‘Abofra’
and produced very quality videos but for some reasons, the songs have
not been as loud as previous ones.
Guru
There’s no doubt about Guru’s consistency in Ghanaian music. Like
Sarkodie, Guru has remained ‘hot’ in the last couple of years – without
the awards though.
However, this year, Guru has not been as exciting and all over the place with his music like he did last year.
In the last years, ‘Pooley’, ‘Nkwaada Nkwaada’,’Mpaebo’, ‘Kpa Kpa
Movement and ‘Bonsam Ani’ were such ‘monster’ hits that propelled Guru:
but this year, songs like ‘Pooley Swag’, ‘Baba God’ and ‘Epic’ have not
kept him ‘hot’.
Ras Kuuku
The man ‘Puom’ had a good year in 2014. His skill as a reggae artist
was highly recognized last year, so was his songs and very energetic
performances. He was, without doubt, the best performer at the Industry
Awards of the 2015 VGMA.
This year has not been as intense for Kuuku, although he has released
some new materials and made some renditions of other hit songs.
Sonnie Badu
Marriage is a good thing: a blessing in so many ways but Sonnie’s
music after the headline-making nuptials, especially in relation to its
play in Ghana, has dwindled.
His ‘Wonder God’ and other inspiring tunes were all over the place,
breaking boundaries last year. He had equally groundbreaking
performances in Ghana in the last 2 years, but this year, he has been on
the ‘low low’.
Akwaboah Jnr.
If not for his vast contribution to Sarkodie’s ‘Mary’ album, nothing
would have been heard of the very talented producer/musician. His
enthusiasm this year cannot be compared to what he put out in 2013-2014,
where he was accepted as a gem, thanks to songs like ‘I love You’,
Nsroma’, ‘Medo’ and ‘Mesan Agye Wo’.
